It's obvious that the most effective way to economize on your power bills is by using less. Most of us have already done the simple and comparatively cheap things like changing to energy efficient bulbs and switching lights off if not in use. There are other very successful methods of saving power however they do have a price associated with them. This sadly puts people off because they do not see the long term savings that could be made.

The following devices have an up front cost of between $30 - $50 however in most cases the devices are long lived and the've a break even point of about one year. The following two devices are convenient to use and in the long term will save you money.

Electricity Monitors. The majority of us like to believe that we don't leave electrical devices switched on when not in use but the truth is how can we know? If we do not know how can we switch them off? That's where an electricity monitor comes into its very own. These devices come in two parts. A transmitter that is clipped onto your electricity meter which in turn sends information to your receiving unit in the home. The receiver includes a large LCD display that shows in real time how much power is being utilized in KW right now.

After a short time the standard background usage becomes known and any deviation from that figure indicates electrical devices that may have been left switched on in error. The common culprit in my home is a teen aged daughter who leaves the water heater switched on. Now most water heaters use more that 3KW of power and leaving them switched on in error can be costly. I estimate my unit which cost $40 paid for itself in about a year and I'm now hooked on looking at the display whenever I pass by!

Standby Power Savers. We assume than when a device is switched to standby it's using less electricity than when it is switched on. The fact is though standby mode often uses around 75% of normal usage! Manufacturers really should be dealing with this issue but until they actually do standby power savers are one answer.

These units are put between your power outlet and the device you intend to switch off. When you want to switch the TV off all you've got to do is press a control button on a remote control and mains power is powered down for that particular device. Switching the unit back on is identical simple press of a button. Considering a lot of electrical equipment is plugged into sockets that are difficult or impossible to reach these devices are a God send. I really like mine because when I go on holiday or go out I know everything is turned off.

Sometimes spending money to save money does can make sense and these power saving units will quickly pay for themselves in a short time. If you think about how quick electricity costs are rising these items make more sense than ever before.
